Let Me Lie
I gave Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh ****Four stars.
Spoiler alert - I'm going to talk about the ending, so give it a miss if you haven't finished the book yet!
A gripping premise - Anna's parents both committed suicide, but she's not convinced. A note comes through the door: 'Suicide? Think again,' and it haunts Anna. We're not sure who to trust as she tries to convince others of her theory that her parents were murdered. Other worrying incidents set Anna's teeth on edge and compound the mystery.
The book is full of well-developed characters and plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing. It's quite a chilling read. I love this author and I've enjoyed all her books. I would have given it five stars but it wasn't my favourite ending. I prefer more hope and happiness in the conclusion of a story. For me, it was anti-climactic because of the death of Sarah and the fact that Anna and Mark split up. I was rooting for Mark when we finally learned he wasn't involved in the crimes, but at the very end, they just separate. Anna was left with no one but her baby.
Of course, these things are deeply personal and you can't please all the people all the time!
